How to Sew a Zipper

Supplies Needed to Sew a  Zipper

we’re going to talk about the supplies needed to sew a zipper. I’m going to give you a list of the things I have and the tools I use.

Sewing Machine:

The sewing machine is the main tool for this project. There’s no way around it.

Straight Pin:

The pin that you’re going to use to connect the fabric and the zipper is a straight pin. I like to use the kind with a wooden handle.

Scissors:

You’ll use these for cutting the fabric and the zipper. I prefer to use shears with smooth blades.

Sewing Machine Needles:

You’ll be using the straight pin to sew the zipper into the fabric. These are usually longer needles and thicker threads.

Fabric Glue:

You’ll be applying the glue to the fabric and the zipper. I use the fabric glue sprayer, but any spray would work.

Iron:

This is your best friend for setting the fabric and the zipper.

How to Sew a Zipper Step by Step

I m going to show you step by step method of how to sew a zipper.

Step 1: Sew the Sliders

With the fabric, use a running stitch to sew a zipper along the bottom of the fabric. It is recommended that you only sew the zipper in the direction of the fabric.

You do not want the zipper to be too long or too short as it may become difficult to close and open. You also do not want the zipper to be too tight or too loose as it may cause the zipper to slide.

It is best to do a test run first to get the best look and feel.

Step 2: Stitch the Buttons

Use a regular sewing machine and stitch the buttons on the sides of the zipper. The buttons can be any shape and size. You can use a snap, button, or even a safety pin.

Make sure that the buttons are centered.

Step 3: Attach the Fabric to the Fabric Strip

With the fabric, cut a zipper strip about 6 to 7 inches long. With a presser foot, use a straight stitch to sew the fabric strip to the bottom of the zipper. The bottom of the zipper is the one closest to the inside of the fabric.

Step 4: Attach the Fabric to the Sliders

To attach the fabric to the zipper, put the zipper on the outside of the fabric. Use a normal sewing machine and stitch the fabric along the bottom of the zipper.

Once the fabric is sewn down, turn the fabric over and then fold it back and forth to make sure there are no raw edges on the zipper.

Step 5: Sew the Top of the Fabric to the Fabric Strip

Put the zipper on the inside of the fabric. Sew the top edge of the fabric to the zipper.

Step 6: Make the Sliders Slide

Now it’s time to make the slider slide. Fold the fabric under and then back and forth to make the slider. Put a couple of pins in the middle of the slider to keep it in place.

When the fabric is folded, you should see the ends of the fabric extending past the zipper. Sew over those ends, making sure that you have enough thread to go around the zipper.

The last thing you want to do is use too much thread. If you use too much thread, it will bunch up, making the slider look odd.

Step 7: Attach the Invisible Thread

Attach a needle to a piece of invisible thread and use a knot to secure it. Use the needle to start at the top of the zipper and move toward the middle.

When the thread reaches the middle of the zipper, pull on it to tighten the thread. Make sure you pull firmly so that the thread doesn’t break.

Pull the thread towards the center so that the ends of the fabric are tucked into the fabric.

Repeat this process until you reach the end of the zipper.

How to Sew a Zipper Pocket- Sewing a Zipper Pocket Step by Step

Step 1:

If you’d like to make a zipper pocket, you’ll use a zigzag machine. Start by placing the zipper in the desired position on the fabric. The zipper should be facing the same direction as the edge of the fabric.

Step 2:

Thread the needle and start stitching. As you stitch, you’ll notice that the zipper end will slowly slide into the seam. When you get to the end of the zipper, stop stitching and put a button on either side of the end of the zipper. The buttons should be pointing towards the center of the fabric.

Step 3:

Put the sewing machine in reverse, then stitch the buttons on. The zigzag stitch will cause the two halves of the zipper to come together and lock the two sides of the zipper. If you look closely, you’ll see the end of the zipper.

How to Sew a Zipper-Exposure vs. Invisibility:

There’s a big difference between a regular, visible zipper and an invisible one. With a regular zipper, you can see where the ends of the zipper meet. With an invisible zipper, you won’t know where the ends of the zipper meet until you open the garment.

Sewing an exposed zipper:

To sew an exposed zipper, you’ll use a regular sewing machine. Start by placing the zipper right next to the edge of the fabric. The edge should be facing the sewing machine.

Thread the needle and start stitching. As you stitch, you’ll notice that the zipper end will slowly slide into the seam. If you see that the zipper is going to fall out, pause the machine and pull the zipper out.

In a pinch, you can also sew an exposed zipper by hand using a normal sewing machine.

Sewing an invisible zipper:

To sew an invisible zipper, you’ll use a special sewing machine called a zigzag machine. Zigzag machines are designed specifically to sew invisible zippers.

Start by placing the zipper right next to the edge of the fabric. The edge should be facing the sewing machine. Thread the needle and start stitching. As you stitch, you’ll notice that the zipper end will slowly slide into the seam.

When you get to the end of the zipper, stop stitching and place a button on either side of the end of the zipper. The buttons should be pointing towards the center of the fabric.

Put the sewing machine in reverse, then stitch the buttons on. The zigzag stitch will cause the two halves of the zipper to come together and lock the two sides of the zipper. If you look closely, you’ll see the end of the zipper.
